Argyle Stuns Whitehall For Class D Title, Miller MVP Keith Harrington-Staff Writer

The Argyle Scotties girls basketball team had lost to undefeated Whitehall twice this season. The Railroaders are a seasoned, veteran group who has seemed unbeatable. Argyle, a young team, that lost a majority of their key players from last year's Class D finalist. So Argyle should be intimidated right? Wrong? The Scots got off to a fast start, and then withstood a Whitehall rally to win the Section II Class D championship 51-42 at Hudson Valley Community College, adding another banner to their wall and another story to their program's historic legacy. Whitehall led 6-2 early on a bucket each from Mackenzie Trevellyan and Katie Paddock, and Trevellyan free throws, but Whitehall got 3 pointers from Lexi McWhorter and Jacquelyn Miller, and a bucket by Ashley Ellis to lead 11-7 after a quarter. A Whitehall 4-0 run to open the second tied things at 11, Argyle used free throws by Hannah Kennedy and Shelby Graham to go up 19-13, but Whitehall used a 6-0 run to even the score again, before another three from Miller sent the Scots to the locker room with a 22-19 advantage. In the third, Argyle took control of the game. They opened the period with a 7-0 run, led by 5 points from Sarah Bonhote and a Graham hoop to go up 29-19. Whitehall responded with a Brittany St. Clair basketball, but Miller reeled of 5 straight points to make it 34-21 Argyle. A Maria McKee drive made it 34-23, but the Railroaders seemed a bit rattle and were doing things that are out of their usual character. The Scots however were playing "loosey goosey" and with a ton of confidence and led 40-28 heading to the final stanza. Argyle erased any doubt of a Whitehall rally early in the fourth, by opening with a 4-1 run to go up 44-29, and then after a Katie Paddock layup, got a Miller uncontested drive to the hoop to go up 46-31. The Scots kept the Railroaders at arm's length the rest of the way, seeing their lead tether between 12 and 15 points, and leading 51-39 when both teams pulled their starters with 46 seconds to play. When the final horn sounded, the Scots erupted into a wild celebration. Miller, the Class D MVP, led Argyle with 18 points. Bonhote chipped in 10. St. Clair led Whitehall with 15. McKee and Paddock added 11 points each. Argyle now plays the Westport(Section 7)/Harrisville(Section 10) winner in the State Regionals next Saturday at noon at Adirondack Community College. ADSN would like to congratulate both the Argyle Scotties and Whitehall Railroaders on outstanding seasons, and thank them for the memories that they provided, and their support of Adirondack SportsNet.
